Southern Miss coach Larry Fedora announced that the NCAA has denied an appeal made by the University to allow corner back/kick return transfer Alonzo Lawrence to play football for the Golden Eagles this season. Lawrence spent the 2008-9 academic year at Alabama and announced his intentions to transfer to Southern Miss during the summer. Lawrence will have three years of eligibility remaining. Chances were slim that the appeal would be approved, but it was a nice try to get "Zo" on the active roster for this year.
Confirming rumors that have been floating around since the spring, Willie Packer will not be playing this season due to academic issues. He is still a member of the team while he continues he academic progress this fall. If Packer makes his grades, he will have three years of eligibility remaining.
