Big Wins All Around This Weekend
Baseball took two out of three against visiting Northwestern State. Overall, the starting pitching seems to be solid. Todd McInnis pitched a stellar game on Friday, allowing one hit in six innings of work while striking out nine. Scott Copeland allowed two earned runs in six innings of work on Saturday. And Geoffrey Thomas allowed one earned run in a surprise start on Sunday. The bullpen was solid in the first two games, but the young (mostly freshmen) arms were roughed up in Sunday's loss. The Golden Eagles return to action on Wednesday against visiting Mississippi Valley State at Pete Taylor Park.
The men's and women's basketball teams were both victorious on Saturday evening at the Green House. The Lady Eagles beat visiting Rice 68-60, extending their home winnings streak to five games. They hit the road on Thursday for a game against Tulsa.
Larry Eustachy's team found themselves down at halftime, but staged a furious comeback to beat Central Florida 68-58. The win improved their season record to 16-10 and 6-6 in Conference USA play. The Golden Eagles will host #25 UTEP on Wednesday night at the Green House.
Softball dropped its first game of the season to Notre Dame, but finished the weekend with two wins after beating Alcorn State and Louisiana Tech in the Southern Miss Mizuno Classic.

Basketball, Baseball, Softball
Basketball season will be coming to an end over the next few weeks. This season has been tough to watch for both teams. Both teams will need to win their post-season tournaments to reach the NCAA tournament. One has to wonder if there will be wholesale coaching changes after the season.
Baseball will begin their run for another College World Series appearance this weekend. New coach Scott Berry will have his hands full replacing players like Bo Davis, James Ewing, Brian Dozier and Jimmy Ballinger. Junior college transfers are expected to fill the gaps and keep the Golden Eagles in the post-season hunt. If the pitching staff, led by new coach Michael Federico, can come together early, USM will be a dangerous team to face. The Golden Eagles host Northwestern State for a three game series beginning on Friday at Pete Taylor Park.
Softball off to 4-0 start including a win over ranked Florida State. The Golden Eagles return to action this weekend as they host the Southern Miss Mizuno Classic. Visiting teams for the Classic include Alcorn State, Louisiana Tech, Notre Dame and Stephen F. Austin.

Future Schedule Upate: 2010 OOC Opponents Finalized
Prairie View A&M was announced as the final out of conference opponent for the 2010 season. Prairie View defeated Alabama A&M, 30-24, in the SWAC championship game to win the title and the Panthers finished the year at 9-1.

Rumors circulated earlier this year that Mississippi Valley State would be playing in Hattiesburg, but terms could not be reached. New Receivers Coach?
Several websites are reporting that Kasey Dunn has been hired as the new wide receivers coach for Southern Miss. Dunn most was recently the running backs coach for the Seattle Seahawks and has had collegiate coaching stops at Idaho, San Diego, New Mexico, Washington State, TCU, Arizona, Baylor and Maryland.
Dunn brings a wealth of experience to the staff, but it's hard to say how long he will be in Hattiesburg. Based on his track record, he will only be here a season or two.
