Academic and athletic leadership from Mississippi State and Southern Miss announced a two game football series beginning in 2014. The home and home series, will be season openers for both schools. The first game is scheduled for August 30, 2014 at Scott Field in Starkville. The following year's contest is set for September 5, 2015 at M.M. Roberts Stadium in Hattiesburg.
The teams last met in 1990. Southern Miss leads the all-time series 14-12-1.
Each visiting team will receive a $200,000 guarantee and each home team will keep 100% of the ticket and concession sales. This series is great for football in Mississippi. Who doesn't like guaranteed sell outs, full hotels and restaurants booming with football fans? Wish the games could be sooner.
It would be nice to see the Big 3 add Mississippi's SWAC schools on a rotating basis as well. Both Southern Miss and Mississippi State have already tested the waters and have proved the sell outs and game day atmospheres are great for the game.
