Golden Eagles Blow Nine Run Lead, Lose Game

With a grand slam from Joey Archer, Southern Miss jumped out to a 13-4 lead against South Alabama on Tuesday night at Stanky Field in Mobile. Unfortunately, a nine run lead was not enough to hold of the Jaguars. USA responded with 10 runs over the next five innings to take the win.

With runners on first and third with no outs in the top of the ninth inning the Golden Eagles had a chance to tie or win the game, but Kameron Brunty was picked off at third and Adam Doleac hit into double play to end the night.

Scott Berry's club is obviously not "gelling" right now. Poor pitching has doomed the Golden Eagles all season long. Everyone knew pitching would be the achilles heel of the squad, but not this bad.

The bats were there tonight, but fell cold when really needed.

And then there is base running. Brunty's pick off at third in the ninth adds to the second straight season of base running blunders for Southern Miss. Berry or assistant coach Chad Calliet needs to work to correct these inexcusable errors.

USM returns to Hattiesburg this weekend to play St. Mary's. This should be a winnable series, but if the poor pitching and comedy of base running errors continues Golden Eagle fans could be in for a long weekend.

Lineman Dismissed, Baseball Struggles Continue, USM Turns 100

Head coach Larry Fedora dismissed senior offensive lineman Trevor Newsom from the football team to for a violation of team rules. Newsom played in nine games after transferring to Southern Miss from Itawamba Community College. He wasn't a starter, but losing a lineman at any point hurts the already thin group. Time for the younger guys to step up.

The Southern Miss baseball team went 1-3 last week with losses to Ole Miss and UAB. The lone victory came in the second game of Saturday's double header against the Blazers. Lack of quality pitching and timely hitting seems to be hurting the Golden Eagles. USM is back in action tonight against rival South Alabama.

The University of Southern Mississippi turned 100 today. Here are a few quick notes about Southern Miss athletics over the past century.

* The University of Southern Mississippi (then State Teachers College) was founded March 30, 1910. When Southern Miss opened its doors on September 18, 1912, athletics, most notably football, must have been on the minds of both the administration and the students, because less than a month passed before the college's first football game occurred. Also during that first month, approximately 150 students organized an athletic association, with science professor Ronald J. Slay as athletic director. At the association's first meeting, held in October 1912, the schools colors of black and gold were adopted.

* Football was established during the 1912 season and the Golden Eagles have played 93 seasons on the gridiron. The school's first game was played on October 13, 1912 at Hattiesburg's Kamper Park (which would remain the football team's home until 1932) against the Hattiesburg Boy Scouts, winning 30-0.

*The Golden Eagles football program won two UPI College Division national championships during the 1958 and 1962 seasons and have captured four league titles since joining Conference USA in 1995 and also won the Gulf States Conference championship in 1948, 1950 and 1951.

* The football team reached its first postseason game in the 1953 Sun Bowl and have been to 20 postseason events in its history including in each of the last eight seasons.

* The program has enjoyed 65 winning seasons including 17 consecutive years from 1651 until 1967 and currently sports 16-straight winning seasons.

* Men's basketball started during the 1912-13 school year and has played 91 seasons on the hardwood. The 1959-60 squad finished the season with a 23-2 record and was ranked fourth in the UPI College Division poll and the 1960-61 squad finished the year 23-3 and ranked 2nd in the UPI College Division poll and 3rd in the Associated Press College Division Poll.

* Men's basketball has a national title of its own, winning the 1987 National Invitational Tournament and becoming team the first in-state Division I team to win a national basketball tournament. The program also has made two NCAA Tournament appearances in 1990 and 1991. During the 1990-91 basketball season the Golden Eagles were ranked as high as No. 9 in the nation and won the regular season championship of the metro Conference.

* Women's basketball was played for the first time during the 1912-1913 school year and continued to play until the early 1930s. The program started again for the 1975-76 season. The women's basketball team has reached NCAA Tournament play eight times including a Sweet Sixteen appearance in 1994. They won the metro Conference regular season title in 1988-89, 1992-93 and 1993-94.

* The baseball program began at Southern Miss in 1913 and competed until the early 1930s, then resumed following World War II. The baseball team reached the College World Series for the first time in the program's history during the 2009 campaign and the school's highest-ever final ranking of No. 8 nationally, by winning the Atlanta regional and the Gainesville super-regional producing the school's crowning moment. The baseball program won the regular season and post-season Conference USA tournaments in 2003 and has played in 10 NCAA regional tournaments, including the last seven seasons.

*The Lady Eagle softball has won two NCAA regional championships and appeared in the College World Series twice (1999 and 2000). The Lady Eagles have appeared in the NCAA regionals four times (1999, 2000, 2001 and 2004) and won the Conference USA regular season championship in 2000 and 2004 and the Conference USA Tournament championship in 2000 and 2001.

Southern Miss ended its 2009-19 campaign with a 66-57 loss to Louisiana Tech in the opening round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. The Golden Eagles finished the season with a 20-14 record. Barring any draft entries or transfers, USM should have a solid group returning next year led by Gary Flowers.

The Southern Miss baseball squad went 3-1 during the week with wins over New Orleans, Louisiana-Monroe and Louisiana Tech. The lone loss came to Louisiana Tech in the opening game in Ruston on Friday night. The rubber game of the Tech series was canceled due to snow (what is this global warming thing we keep hearing about?). Like the canceled Troy game earlier in the season, the game will not be rescheduled. The Golden Eagles return to action on Tuesday night against nationally ranked Ole Miss at Trustmark Park.

After losing to Mississippi State 14-4 on Wednesday, the USM softball team extended its losing streak to six games. After having the weekend off, the Golden Eagles travel to Nicholls State on Wednesday.

Post Season Basketball, Baseball Sweeps, Football Schedule Update

After a nice run in the Conference USA tournament, Southern Miss basketball will be in post season basketball play for the first time since 2001. The Golden Eagles accepted an invite to the CIT Tournament and will face Louisiana Tech in the first round Thursday night in Ruston.

And for those that didn't see RL Horton's shot against Houston.

Scott Berry's club put together a weekend series sweep for the first time this season after taking three games from visiting Missouri State. Scott Copeland's performance on Saturday earned him Conference USA's Pitcher of the Week honors. There is still room for improvement, especially with Sunday starting pitching. Jeff Stanley will get another shot in next Sunday's game at Louisiana Tech. The Golden Eagles will face UNO tonight at the Pete before hitting the road for games at Louisiana-Monroe and Louisiana Tech.

The 2010 football schedule will be released today at noon.

Eagles Win In First Round, Secure Post Season Bid?

Southern Miss beat Tulane today in the opening round of the Conference USA basketball tournament. It was USM's third win over the Green Wave this season. The Golden Eagles will face UAB tomorrow afternoon at 2:30pm in a nationally televised game on CBS College Sports.

Rumors have been circulating that the Golden Eagles might make to a post-season tournament and after the game Larry Eustachy said they are in. In addition to the traditional NCAA and NIT, two sixteen-team tournaments (CBI and CIT) have been developed over the past several years. At this point, USM will most likely be in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT) against a regional opponent. As Eustachy pointed out, "that's not what we're here for." If the Golden Eagles win out, they will be in the Big Dance and maybe a chance at the NIT if they make it to the C-USA Championship Game.

Baseball Cancelled, Softball's Ugly Weekend, Basketball Tournaments

Tomorrow night's home baseball game against Troy has been canceled due to inclement weather. The game may be rescheduled at a later date, but there is a good chance the game will not be made up. The extra day off gives injured players like Joey Archer and Travis Graves more time to heal nagging injuries. The cancellation may also speed up anticipated weekend pitching rotation changes. Weekday starter Jeff Stanley may take the Sunday spot on the mound allowing freshman Geoffrey Thomas to move to a weekday spot or the bullpen. The Golden Eagles return to action on Friday for a three game set against visiting Missouri State.

The softball team dropped four of five games over the weekend at the Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The Golden Eagles lone win was over Eastern Illinois. Now 12-6, Southern Miss will open Conference USA play on the road this weekend when they face Houston for a three game series.

The women's basketball team ended their horrible season with a 102-64 loss in the opening round of the Conference USA Tournament in Tulsa. The Lady Eagles finished the season with a 9-21 record. Is Joye Lee-McNelis on the hot seat?

If their was one positive to the season, it was senior Pauline Love. She had an incredible season and was rewarded by being named First Team All-Conference USA.

Larry Eustachy's club finished the regular season with a little momentum with wins over Tulane and East Carolina. The Golden Eagles will face Tulane for the third time this season tomorrow in the opening round of the Conference USA Tournament in Tulsa. Tulane has dropped both meetings against Southern Miss this season. The winner will face UAB in a nationally televised game (CBS College Sports) on Thursday at 2:30pm.

Gary Flowers and Sai'Quon Stone both earned post season honors from Conference USA. Flowers was named Second Team All-Conference USA and Stone was named to the Conference USA All-Defensive Team.

Dunn Officially Added To Staff, Basketball On Senior Day

Larry Fedora officially added Kasey Dunn to the football coaching staff today. Dunn will coach wide receivers after spending the past two seasons coaching running backs for the NFL's Seattle Seahawks.

Southern Miss beat Tulane 66-57 tonight in the final home game of the season at Reed Green Coliseum. The Golden Eagles improved to 17-12 (7-8) with the win. Golden Eagles fans said goodbye to outgoing seniors Buchi Awaji, Bryson Brewer, Gustavo Lino and Andre Stephens.

Baseball Struggling, Softball Sweeps Weekend Invitational

After a blowing out Mississippi Valley State on Wednesday, Southern Miss dropped two games to visiting LeMoyne over the weekend. Errors, walks and young arms seem to be the biggest challenges for Scott Berry's staff so far. Young pitchers are being thrown in the fire and the team is missing the productivity from key positions. Berry has been proactive in trying to find the right combination to put on the field with several lineup changes in the first seven games. The Golden Eagles (4-3) will try to right the ship on Wednesday when they host Louisiana-Monroe. The Warhawks (2-3) can be a dangerous team to face and already have a victory over nationally ranked Ole Miss this season.

After dropping a mid-week game to South Alabama, the Southern Miss softball team rebounded by winning the Southern Miss Invitational. The Golden Eagles four victories came over Belmont, Central Arkansas, Indiana and Jackson State. Coach Howard Dobson will take his 11-2 squad to Fayetteville, Arkansas this weekend for the Razborback Invitational. USM is scheduled to play Drake, Iowa State, Eastern Illinois, Louisiana-Lafayette and Arkansas during the three-day tournament.
